Your kid will have a blast this Valentine’s Day at school with this rocket Valentine Card Box for boys. Using inexpensive items from the dollar store, you can make this box for under $5.
Valentine’s Day is around the corner, and your kids will probably receive lots of Valentine’s Day cards from their friends at school. It’s better to plan ahead if you want to design and make a creative Valentine box that will wow the rest of the kids in class.
If you need an inexpensive Valentine box for boys, I got the perfect one for you! With items from the dollar store, this rocket Valentine box only costs about $3.50 (provided you have pencils, tape, scissors, and glue at home). It may cost you even less because you probably already have colored wrapping paper and construction paper in your crafts supplies.
Your kids will love this space-themed Valentine card box. They will be so proud to show it to their friends at school and put the cards they receive in the rocket. They can even have a blast (haha so corny) using it for pretend play after Valentine’s Day!
How to Make the Rocket Valentine Box
Supplies
- 1 cylinder gift container box (it should have a removable top and the cylinder should be wide enough to put cards in)
- Blue or other rocket ship appropriate colored wrapping paper (for the body of the rocket ship)
- Red or other rocket ship appropriate colored wrapping paper (for the fins/top & booster)
- Metallic gift bag filling
- 3 pieces of white construction paper
- 8” plate and 6” plate
- Scotch tape
- Glue Gun and/or white glue/glue stick
- Scissors
- Pencil or pen
- Free rocketship fins templates
Instructions:
The Body of the Rocket Ship:
Step 1: Remove the top of the cylinder tube. Lay the body of the cylinder container on the blue wrapping paper on its side. Match the bottom of the container with one edge of the wrapping paper. Use a pencil and mark the top edge of the container at two different spots. Draw a line. Cut the paper so that the blue wrapping paper cover the container completely.
Wrap and tape the blue wrapping paper to the cylinder container.
Step 2: Repeat step 1 with the cylinder top. The sides (lateral area)of both the body and the top should be fully wrapped in blue wrapping paper.
Step 3: Place the 8” plate on a piece of construction paper and using the pen or pencil, trace around it. Use a scissor to cut out the circle.
Step 4: Place the same 8″ plate on the red color wrapping paper and trace around it with a pen or pencil. Cut it out with a scissor.
Step 5: Repeat steps 3 and 4 with the smaller 6″ plate. If you don’t have a 6″ plate, you can use a 4″ plate (or any size in between).
Step 6: Glue each red circle onto the respective construction paper circles of the same size and allow to dry completely.
Once dry, cut a line from the edge to the middle of the circle. Roll both circles into a cone and tape or glue the cones in place.
Step 7: Glue the larger cone onto the top of the cylinder container.
The Accessories of the Rocket Ship:
Steps 8: Print out the rocket ship fins template. Note that depending on the size of your cylinder tube, you may want to adjust the size of the fins when you print. Cut out the rocket ship fins from the template and trace them onto a piece of construction paper and the red wrapping paper.
Cut out the fins from the construction paper and red wrapping paper and glue them together. Allow the glue to dry.
Step 9: Measure up 4” from the bottom of the container on each side and make a mark. Fold your fins as indicated on the template and glue as marked on the container. Allow drying completely.
Step 10: Cut the tip off the smaller cone and glue to the bottom of the cylinder container. This is the booster of your rocket 😊
Steps 11: Gather a handful of the metallic gift bag filler and tape it together about ½” from the top.
Glue it to the inside of the rocket booster and allow it to dry completely.
Now just lift the top of the rocket Valentine card box to insert the Valentine’s Day cards from friends!
I hope your kids enjoy this DIY Valentine card box. After Valentine’s Day is over, they can display the rocket ship proudly in their rooms, or they can use it for fun space-themed activities!
