John W. Thompson Obituary - 2023 (2024)

John William Thompson, 63, of Vernon, CT; passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 26, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on June 28, 1960, in Hartford, CT and was raised in Rockville, CT. He graduated from Rockville High School, Class of 1979 and played for the Rockville High School hockey team. He attended Southern Connecticut State University and in his spare time played for a local men's hockey team, Ell Rock.

Alongside his brothers, John was part owner of a local family business, Tire Town, Inc., which was started by their father in 1961. Through Tire Town, John enjoyed the relationships he built with his customers and the ability to help out his community and other local businesses.

John received the Outstanding Citizen Award from the Vernon Police Department for assisting in the rescue of two young boys and a police officer from the Hockanum River flood outside of Tire Town in 2007.

John loved spending time with his family and was a diehard Boston Red Sox fan. Many fond memories with his family took place at Fenway Park. He was a member of the Italian Social Club “The Club on the Hill” in Rockville, CT. John was a Saint Bernard's School basketball coach for many years. He enjoyed taking trips to Maine and Vermont, playing set back and always had a good time no matter where he was or who he was with.

He is survived by his beloved wife Peggy, two sons, Benjamin and Adam Thompson, daughter and son-in-law, Amelia and John Harrison and his greatest joys in life, grandchildren, Alexis, Connor, Jack, and Brooks. John is also survived by his sister, Mary Kate Waltenius, brother Peter and his wife Debi and brother Michael and his wife Jackie. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends. He is predeceased by his mother and father, Katherine and Maurice (Moe) Thompson and his brother and sister, Mark and Anne.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The Cornerstone Foundation in Rockville CT.

Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family from 4 to 7 PM on Friday, September 1, 2023 at the Burke-Fortin Funeral Home, 76 Prospect St. Rockville, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, September 2, 2023 at St. Bernard's Church, 25 St. Bernard Terrace, Rockville. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
