Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the most popular anime out there. It aired back in 1995. People who have watched it claim it to be the best anime. Why? There are many reasons. It is unlike your normal shounen. The characters feel real and the plot is absolutely peak!!!

In case you haven’t watched the show, I’ll tell you a bit about the plot. The story revolves around Evangelion. What is an Evangelion? These are basically giant robots manufactured to fight giant heavenly beings called “Angels”. Our MC Shinji Ikari is the only one capable of piloting a special Evangelion, Evangelion Unit-01!However, it is not easy to pilot it as it puts a lot of mental pressure on the pilot.
Still, Shinji somehow manages! This anime basically has multiple protagonists, but despite that, supporting characters like Asuka Langley, Rei Ayanami, and Katsuragi Misato, also didn’t fail to prove themselves.

Asuka Langley
Asuka is one of the protagonists of the show. She is one of the most popular characters in the entire franchise. Like the other protagonists, Asuka is also an Evangelion pilot. She is also known as the second child as she is capable of piloting the Evangelion unit-02.
Asuka is a very proud individual. She is extremely confident in her piloting abilities. In the beginning, she used to believe that she was invulnerable. This attitude of hers kinda backfired and resulted in her failure. Because of her overly proud nature, she has difficulty in opening up to others.
She thinks that if she tells others about her vulnerabilities, she would be considered weak. It is really difficult to keep a conversation with her.
Sooo, if your result fits with Asuka’s traits, you are probably a proud and confident individual. You have a sense of superiority and you consider yourself to be invulnerable.
Shinji Ikari
Shinji Ikari is the male protagonist of the show. Shinji is the son of Gendo Ikari ( Former Gehirn Chief ) and the only person capable of piloting Evangelion unit-01. Shinji had a traumatic childhood. He was forsaken by his father after his mother’s death and had to live with his teacher. After 11 long years, he was hailed to pilot the Evangelion Unit-01
He is also regarded as the 3rd child. In the beginning, he was a coward. He used to panic easily and his reflexes were not sharp enough to tackle any tough situation. However, as time passed, he gained confidence and his fighting abilities improved a lot.
But, I must remind you!! Neon Genesis is unlike your typical shounen. It is really DARK!! Shinji’s whole progress was wasted in the latter half of the series as things got out of hand. He returned to being his old coward self.

Rei Ayanami
Rei Ayanami is the next character. She is also one of the protagonists and also an Eva pilot. She is also known as the 1st child and the pilot of Evangelion unit-00. She lives alone in a shabby apartment.
At the beginning of the series, fans were really confused about Rei. Her character was a mystery. Some even thought that she is not a human butshe is!! Rei is what you can call a really Introverted introvert. It’s not that she finds it difficult to express her emotions, it’s like she doesn’t even feel them.
She likes to stay alone, away from people. It is only in the latter half of the series that we see a change in her persona. She was able to smile, cry, and even feel anger. You can say that Shinji changed her.

Misato Katsuragi
Misato Katsuragi is one of the protagonists of the show. Unlike other MCs, she is not an Eva pilot. She works for NERV and serves as their chief officer. She also holds the rank of a captain.
She is also the one who gives orders to all the pilots. You can call her the FIELD COMMANDER!!
It is her duty to issue orders to all the Eva pilots and track their progress. She is an extremely calm and collected individual and expert at her work. She can even be called a genius. Outside her work, she is quite a drinker. (Shinji really dislikes her drinking habits, lol!!)
About her personality, Misato is really caring. She cares a lot for the people around her. Having lost her parents quite early, she doesn’t want to lose anyone else.
Also, she is the one who motivated Shinji to pilot. Sooo, if you’re quiz matched with her, you are quite a prodigy. You are a calm and collected individual. You care a lot about the people around you. You are serious about your work. However, outside work, you are a really jolly person.
Kowaru Nagisa
Kowaru Nagisa is one of the most popular characters in the entire series. He is one of the antagonists, known as the 17th and the last Angel.
Kowaru was created by a secret society named SEELE by combining the DNA of humans and Adam. He can be considered Adam’s vessel. He is also a spare pilot working for NERV. He is basically a double agent. He also tried to break into the Terminal Dogma to meet Adam, however, he was disappointed after seeing Lilith instead.
Kowaru is quite similar to Rei since both of them are not typically humans. However, unlike Rei, Kowaru is really proud and arrogant. He actually feels like a normal human. He knows who he is, and what his purpose is. He is quite interested in human culture as well.
If your persona matched with Kowaru, then I doubt if you are even human. Why do you want to destroy Earth? Justt kidding!! Like Kowaru, you are a very proud individual. You don’t trust people easily and know how to manipulate them just like Kowaru manipulated NERV for his purpose.
Gendo Ikari
Gendo Ikari is one of the supporting characters of the series. As mentioned before, he is the father of our MC, Shinji Ikari. Gendo abandoned Shinji after his mother’s death.
Gendo is the commander of NERV. He also played a huge role in the development of the Evangelion. Even though Gendo was a terrible father, he still was an exceptional leader. The way he led NERV is inspiring. He knew exactly what to do for the betterment of his organization even if he had to use underhanded methods.
According to him, he left Shinji for his own betterment. He had multiple affairs in the organization but all of them were for some purpose. He wanted to bring his wife Yui back to life.
If your quiz matches Gendo, then you are probably a terrible father! Just kidding! What I meant to say is that you have unparalleled leadership qualities. You care a lot about your friends and family but have a hard time expressing affection.
Ryoji Kaji
Ryoji Kaji is one of the most popular characters in the entire franchise. He basically works as a triple agent for NERV, Japanese Government, and SEELE. He is also Misato’s former lover. Besides all this, he has his personal motives as well.
Ryoji is like a father figure to Shinji. He is the one who taught Shinji the realities of this society. He also motivated him to become stronger.
Ryoji is a very unperturbed and calm individual. He doesn’t care about appearances. He seems calm and collected even during tough situations. His sense of humor is also elite. Still, sometimes he feels that he is not good enough. This line basically explains most of us, right?
If your persona matched with Ryoji, you are a very calm and collected guy. You have a great sense of humor as well. You are also a very trustworthy person. You sometimes doubt yourself, but you don’t let it show in front of other people.
Ritsuko Akagi
Ritsuko Akagi is a supporting character. She works as the head scientist of NERV. She is the daughter of Naoko Akagi, the scientist who developed the Magi supercomputer.
Ritsuko is a very sharp and intelligent individual. She has great instincts and is very knowledgeable about Evas. She has some extreme dedication towards her work.
She is also a heavy smoker as indicated by the ashtray in her office. She also loves cats. Her interactions with Misato are the best.

As I’ve already said, Neon Genesis Evangelion is unlike your typical shounen. Almost all of the characters have some dark past to deal with. You won’t find any happy-go-lucky characters in this show!
However, it is really important to know that your life is not an anime. You can always do better and improve. You only get to live once. Just enjoy your life to the fullest!!
