I wanna be that cool chick who decorates my mantel for every holiday – but Valentine’s Day always had me stumped. Until I came across some heart shaped cards from Michaels! I grabbed a few packs, turned on my cutting machine, and in less than 15 minutes I had a DIY Valentine’s garland that I’m proud to display!

Also, if that is not enough, I’m thrilled to be joining 43 other makers to celebrate Valentine’s Day with some DIY projects – I’m sharing all of them at the end of this post so be prepared to be inspired!

NOTE: If you can’t find heart shaped cards, you could also fold a piece of scrapbook paper or construction paper in half and cut out a heart shape on the top of the fold line.

HOW TO MAKE SIMPLE HEART GARLAND:

1. Open the card and lay the twine across the fold.

2. Use your Mega Runner to apply some adhesive at the top of the heart and at the bottom.

NOTE: If you don’t have a Mega Runner or Tape Runner, you can also use a glue stick instead.

3. Fold the card closed.

4. Cut your XO images from glitter cardstock. I used a file in Design Space.

5. Add foam tape to the back of each letter and adhere.

Note: If you don’t want to add XO to your paper hearts, you could decorate them in other ways. For example, you could use hot glue to add pom poms, a different type of paper, ribbons, fabric, and more! Also, if you like the heart look, you could add layers of hearts onto each main heart to give the garland more dimension.

And voila!

This project is such a fun take on a paper heart garland and it pairs so well with a felt ball garland or yarn pom pom garland on a mantel!

For my mantel setup, I hung this DIY Valentine garland using regular tape, but you could use Command Hooks instead. Then, after the heart garland was secure, I layered in my DIY Pom Pom Garland and a red and white pom pom/tassel garland.

I have a full tutorial for the DIY Pom Pom Garland that you can see here if you want to learn more. However, I don’t have a tutorial for the red and white pom pom/tassel garland. Instead, if you like that look, you can check out my DIY Garland Decoration With Yarn tutorial, where I show you how to make a tassel garland and a braided garland. In that tutorial, the garland is created with yarn from Bernat in the colors of Frosted Pine, Sea Spray, and Surf, which are basically different shades of blue. So, if you are making the tassel garland or braided garland for Valentine’s Day, you can easily swap out the yarn colors and use red, pink, white, or pastels instead.

No matter what you do, just add ”make a Valentine’s Day garland” to your to-do list, because, trust me, you will have so much fun!
