It is therefore suitable for large beach bags where you can put everything for your days at the beach. For the swatch in the picture, we used: 9 mm (US M/N13) beechwood crochet hook.
To figure out how many skeins you need for your bag design, you'll need to divide the approximate grams of your finished bag by the grams of one skein of yarn. Using my calculations as an example: 940 ÷ 85 = 11.0588235294 or 11 skeins. Of course, this is a rough estimate, but our calculations should be close.
If your material tends to break or tear, rather than stretch, the plastic is probably too brittle and not suitable for crocheting. You will need 2 to 3 dozen plastic grocery sacks to make the market bag.
To make a tote bag that is sturdy, that will take the weight of heavy items and keep its shape, you need a #3 Light / DK weight of yarn or above and a yarn that is strong like hemp, jute and chunky cotton. To make sure it is sustainable, choose a recycled or organic cotton.
Backstitch. One of the most basic and commonly used stitches in bag stitching is the backstitch. This stitch creates a strong seam that can withstand the weight and stress of everyday use. To create a backstitch, start by taking a small stitch forward, then bring the needle back through the end of the previous stitch.
Here is a calculation you can use to determine approximately how many skeins you may need (for a medium-tight knit blanket). You can replace the 50 x 60 with whatever measurements you have: A blanket 50x60: 50x60=3000 divide by 350 = 8.57 - 9 skeins.
While the amount of yarn you need to crochet a bag varies depending on the size of your bag, your gauge and the stitch you're using, you can usually make a decently-sized crochet bag or purse with 200 yards of yarn or less. For my My Favourite Festival Purse design, you'll only need 131 yards of yarn.
Cotton yarn is a popular choice for crocheting bags because it's durable and easy to care for. It's also breathable and hypoallergenic, making it ideal for people with sensitive skin. Acrylic yarns are another excellent option as they're affordable and come in a wide range of colors.
While there are a couple of advanced techniques, it's nothing that should be out of your skill level. If you can chain, single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet, then you can work this crochet tote bag pattern. Plus, there's a video to help you through!
Hook. Use a hook size smaller than you normally would with your yarn. I usually use a 5 mm hook with 8 ply cotton, but when making bags, I use a 4 mm. It gives a denser, less lacy, sturdier fabric.
You can also stiffen crochet projects using starch. This is how many crocheters block their crocheted doilies. You can use the powdered kind that is dissolved in water or you can use the pressurized starch sprays that are available in the laundry section.
It's a very simple crochet bag pattern that uses only basic stitches (single crochet, chain and slip stitches). This bag pattern uses two strands of yarn held together at the same time, which creates a thick, dense fabric making it the perfect material for your tote bag.
Looking to crochet something super durable? The waistcoat stitch is perfect to use when making heavy duty bags or anything that's going to get a lot of wear out of it. This stitch isn't hard to make either; it is made using a single crochet stitch. The only difference is how you insert your hook to pull the loop up.
