Easy Market Tote - Free Crochet Pattern (2024)

The Easy Market Tote is the perfect bag to take with you to all of those fun markets going on at this time of year. It’s also great for grocery shopping, carrying projects for crocheting on-the-go, going to the beach or pool, and just for carrying all of those odds and ends that you need to take with along with you!

This market tote works up so quickly and uses about 3/4 of a Cotton Cake. The combination of the shell stitches along with the double crochet stitches keeps this pattern quick and easy while also being flexible for holding items of all shapes and sizes. Not to mention it’s also super comfortable to wear on your shoulder.

Materials:
  • Worsted-Weight Cotton Yarn (#4) – I used a Caron Cotton Cake in the Peach Blossom colorway. This bag took about three quarters of the 485m/530yd skein. You can use another worsted-weight cotton yarn for this project, just be sure to check the gauge below to help you with your yarn substitutions so you aren’t surprised with a much smaller/larger bag.
  • Crochet hook – 5.0mm size
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Stitches Used:
  • Ch – Chain
  • Sl St – Slip Stitch
  • SC – Single crochet
  • DC – Double crochet
  • Shell – 4 double crochet stitches made in the same stitch.
Gauge:
  • 2 inches square = 4 rows of 8 DC stitches
Finished Size:
  • When laying flat, this bag is approx. 15 inches wide and 13 inches tall(not including the handles).

Important Notes:
  • Joined Rounds – This bag is worked in joined rounds. At the end of each round, you will be joining the last stitch of the round to the first stitch with a slip stitch. If you need a tutorial for starting the bag with the magic circle and working in increasing rounds, check out my How to Work in Increasing Rounds Tutorial.
  • Starting Each Round – Start the first stitch of each round in the same stitch as the chain 1 or chain 2. Chain stitches do not count towards the stitch count of each round.
  • Changing Bag Size – You can easily make this bag wider by continuing the increases in groups of 12 in the DC rounds making the base of the bag, before you start the rounds making the height of the bag. To make the bag taller, you can repeat rounds 22-27 another time before starting on the rounds of SC at the top of the bag, or if that’s too many rounds taller, you can add a couple rounds of DC before starting on the SC rounds.
  • Video Tutorial – I made a video tutorial to help you with some of the stitches in this pattern. You can find it on this page or on YouTube HERE.

The base of the bag is worked in increasing rounds of double crochet. I made a quick video tutorial to show how to double crochet in increasing rounds.

In the last few rounds below, you will be adding the handle and then making it thicker by crocheting around the bag and around the handle a few times. *Note – If you’d like your bag to have longer handles, just add more chain stitches in round 32. Just make sure you make each chain the same length so that both the handles are the same. 😊

*If you need help working the rounds of the handle, check out this video for a tutorial on adding handles onto crochet tote bags using the same technique as for this pattern!
