What yarn to use for my Easter gnomes?

I used Bernat Premium by Yarnspiration yarn in all of my previous crochet gnome patterns. I just love how soft it is but at the same time, it holds shape.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have the yellow shade I need and for this crochet chicken gnome, I used Yarn Bee Soft and Sleek yarn. I recently found this yarn and I was amazed. It holds its name as it is so soft and sleek to crochet with. It has perfect tension and vibrant colors.

How to customize your Easter chicken gnomes?

So many fellow crocheters from our crochet Facebook group have managed to surprise us every time we release a new pattern. I know that you will get creative this time as well.

For example, you can add some mini flowers to the chicken or add some dots to the eggshell. Maybe make the eggshell a different color.

Easter chicken gnome pattern:

Materials:

– Worsted weight yarn- Yarn Bee soft and Sleek solids 100% Acrylic, 5.0 oz/142 g, 232 yds/ 212 m solid
colors-Yarn Bee soft and sleek solid in yellow 50-60 gr, white 40 gr, orange 10gr, and a small amount of Beige for the nose and hands
– crochet hook size 4mm/ US crochet hook size G
– poly fiber fill for stuffing
– tapestry needle

Finished size:

The finished size of the gnome is 24cm

Stitch Abbreviation:

SC- single crochet

DC- double crochet

SS- slip stitch

CH- chain

Rep- repeat

Dec- decrease

MR- magic ring

– repeat the stitches in the ** indicated times

FO- fasten off BLO- back loop only

Pattern notes:

1. The pattern is written in US crochet terms.

2. The pattern is worked in one piece. We start from the base and work it up to the hat.

3. The pattern is worked in continuous rounds. Do not join your rounds.

4. If you use a different weight of yarn, keep in mind that your gnome will turn out bigger or smaller.

5. If you are crocheting loosely, use a smaller hook so your work will be tighter and the stuffing won’t be visible.

6. When stuffing the body- stuff it well, so it will stay in shape, but don’t overdo it. You can still insert cardboard in the base to make it flat but it will stay still without it as well.

Insert your hook in any front loop of round 17 and pull a loop.

*skip 1, 5 DC in next, skip 1, SS in next* 12 times. In the last, you will skip 2 instead of 1 and join with SS to the first stitch. You must have 12 shells.

Hat:

Rnd 1: Insert your hook in any stitch of rnd 28, pull a loop, ch 1, SC in same st, SC in next st, *SC in next 3, inc 1* 10 times (52)

Chicken beak:

-with orange color

CH 6, SC in 2^nd from your hook, HDC in next, DC in next, CH 1, DC in same, HDC in next, SC in last. FO.

Chicken eyes:

-with white

Start with a MR and make 5 SC into it. Insert your safety eyes in the middle. Close your ring and Ss to join.

If you don’t have safety eyes just use a tapestry needle and make 2-3 small lines with black yarn to form the iris of the eye.

How to assembly the Easter carrot gnome:

1. Use safety pins to secure your pieces first then sew them when you are sure you like your placement.
2. First, start with sewing the nose. Sew the nose onto the body right below the hat’s brim.
3. Place the hands on either side. Leave 4 stitches between the beard and the hands.
4. Sew the chicken beak and eyes onto the hat.
5. Make the braids.

How to make the braids:

Cut 30-40 long pieces and fold them in the middle. Now take your hook and insert it 3-4 stitches on the left or right side of the gnome’s nose. Attach the folded piece of yarn and pull it through the loop. Take the yarn off the hook and insert the opposite side through the loop we created with the yarn as we make a tie note. I wanted to make more thick braids for my gnome, so I made two rows of hair and then just braided it a bit more loosely.
